The three steps to your motorcycle licence

Getting your motorcycle licence in New Zealand involves three stages: the Learner Licence (6L), the Restricted Licence (6R), and the Full Licence (6F). Here’s how we guide you through each stage at Rightway Riding Academy.

1.

Class 6L Learners Licence

The journey to getting your full motorcycle licence begins with obtaining your Learners licence. This involves completing a Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST) and a theory test. The BHST is designed to assess your ability to control a motorcycle safely and confidently. Once you've successfully completed this step, you'll be ready to move on to the restricted licence stage, where you'll build on the skills you've learned so far.

The BHST course includes bike, riding equipment, practice test, and BHST certificate if achieved in the session. Our experienced instructors will coach you through the requirements, ensuring you're well-prepared to pass the test.
Once you've passed the BHST, you'll be issued with a certificate, allowing you to progress to the theory test. The theory test consists of 35 questions, and you can prepare for it with our online group study course.
2.

Class 6R Restricted Licence

After obtaining your Learners licence, you can progress to the Restricted licence stage. To be eligible, you must be at least 16.5 years old and have held your Learners licence for the required period. You can choose to take a CBTA course, which will give you the skill level to confidently achieve the restricted stage without waiting 6 months. With your Restricted licence in hand, you'll be one step closer to getting your full motorcycle licence, and we'll be here to guide you every step of the way.

The CBTA Restricted Assessment is 1 hour in length and requires you to demonstrate a good standard of road craft and motorcycle control. Our CBTA course includes sign-in, pre-bike checks, pre-ride brief, assessment, and DL restricted certificate.

3.

Class 6F Full Licence

The final step to getting your full motorcycle licence is the Class 6F assessment. To be eligible, you must be at least 17.5 years old and have held your restricted license for a minimum of 9 months. The CBTA Full Licence assessment is 30 minutes in length and requires you to demonstrate a high standard of road craft and motorcycle control. Upon passing this assessment, you'll be proud to call yourself a fully licensed motorcyclist, and we'll be here to support you as you continue to develop your riding skills.

Our course may include motorcycle, helmet, gloves, jacket, and wet weather clothing, or you can bring your own riding equipment.

Fast-Tracking Your Motorcycle Licence

At Rightway Riding Academy, we offer a fast-track option that allows you to get your motorcycle licence in just 12 months. This is possible through our CBTA courses and assessments, which can reduce the time it takes to gain your Restricted and/or Full motorcycle licence.

The benefits of CBTA include improved riding skill levels, reduced time to gain licences, and personalised feedback on your riding skills. Our qualified and experienced CBTA instructors will guide you through the process, ensuring you're well-prepared for the assessments.
